Max Evans: What's so great about normal?
Liz Parker : Don't you realize what you are to me...and you're always gonna be? You're the love of my life. Everyone else is gonna be second best. There'll never be another you.
Alessandro Del Piero
Joan: Talking about love is like dancing about architecture.
(Playing by Heart)
Willy Wonka: We are the music makers... and we are the dreamers of dreams.
Samwise Gangee: Don't go where I can't follow...
(Lord of the Rings)
Mary Crawley: Dear Lord, I don’t pretend to have much credit with you. I’m not even sure you’re there. But if you are, and if I’ve ever done anything good, I beg you to keep him safe.
Quand le doigt montre la lumière, l'imbécile regarde le doigt.
(Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain)
Christian: The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.
Peyton Sawyer: I was reminded today in a round about way that the most perfect act of love is sacrifice.
(One Tree Hill)
Lucas Scott: The boy saw the comet and he felt as though his life had meaning. And when it went away, he waited his entire life for it to come back to him.
It was more than just a comet, because of what it brought to his life. Direction. Beauty. Meaning. There were many who didn't understand, and sometimes he walked among them, but even in his darkest hours he knew in his heart that someday it would return to him. And his world would be whole again. His belief in God, and love, and art, would be reawakened in his heart.
(One Tree Hill)
Liz Parker: Have you ever had a moment when you're with the one person in the world you want to be with and the wind is blowing through your hair and the song that just describes your entire soul happens to come on … and then the person that you want to be with happens to love the same song and suddenly you realize you're listening to it together? And that no matter how crazy your life has gotten there's this one moment ... this perfect moment ... where you could just say that no matter what happens, nothing can take this moment away from me ...
Josie Geller: That thing, that moment, when you kiss someone and everything around becomes hazy and the only thing in focus is you and this person and you realize that that person is the only person that you're supposed to kiss for the rest of your life, and for one moment you get this amazing gift and you want to laugh and you want to cry because you feel so lucky that you found it and so scared that that it will go away all at the same time.
(Never been kissed)
Liz Parker: I could feel everything he was feeling. I could feel his loneliness.
For the first time, I was really seeing Max Evans. I saw me as he saw me, and the amazing thing was, in his eyes, I was beautiful.
Jamie Fraser: I will find you. I promise. If I must endure two hundred years purgatory, two hundred years without you - then that is my punishment, which I have earned for my crimes. For I have lied, and killed, and stolen; betrayed and broken trust. But there is one thing that shall lie in the balance. When I shall stand before God, I shall have one thing to say, to weigh against the rest. Lord, ye gave me a rare woman, and God! I loved her well.
(Outlander series - Dragonfly in Amber)
Noah Calhoun: Well, that's what we do. We fight. You tell me when I'm being an arrogant son of a bitch and I tell you when you're being a pain in the ass. Which you are 90% of the time. I'm not afraid to hurt your feelings. They have like a two second rebound rate and you're back doing the next pain-in-the-ass thing. So, what? So it's not gonna be easy. It's gonna be really hard. And we're gonna have to work at this every day, but I want to do that, because I want you. I want all of you, forever, you and me, every day. Will you do something for me? Please? Will you just picture your life for me? Years from now, years from now, what's it look like? If it's with that guy, go! Go! I lost you once, I think I could do it again, if I thought it's what you really wanted. But don't you take the easy way out.
Jack Twist: The truth is... sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it.
Noel Crane: Although it’s true, it seems impossible. Nine months ago, I didn’t even know you. Now I can say with absolute certainty that there’s no one on the planet who means more to me than you. Whatever happens to you and Ben, and whatever happens with you and anyone, it could never change the way I feel.
Will Tippin: Syd, I don't love you because of what you do or what you don't do...I just love you.
Larry Paul: Did you hear what I just said?! I've never loved anybody as much as I love you. And I'm only at the beginning of loving you.
Dylan McKay: [to Brenda] I loved you more than I ever thought I could love anybody. Maybe that was the problem.
(Beverly Hills, 90210)
Jamie Fraser: “When the day shall come that we do part," he said softly, and turned to look at me, "if my last words are not 'I love you' - ye'll ken it was because I didna have time.”
(Outlander Series - The Fiery Cross)
Pacey Witter: You're off the hook. I've never really put much faith in all that 'if you love someone, set them free' crap, as evidenced by everything I've done in my life up to this very moment. But I am determined to be happy, Joey. Happy in this life.
And I love you. I mean, I always-- I have always, always loved you. But our timing has just never been right. And the way I figure it, time is no man's friend. So I have to get right with that and be happy, now. Because this is it. I mean, this is all that we get. If there's one thing I've learned from losing Jen, that's what I've learned...
Actually, um, hold on. I'm not done yet. Because I also want for you to be happy. It's really important for me that you be happy. So I want you to be with someone, whether it be Dawson or New York guy or some man that you haven't even met yet. But I want you to be with someone who can be a part of the life that you want for yourself. I want you to be with someone who makes you feel like I feel when I'm with you. So, I guess the point to this long run-on sentence that's been the last ten years of our lives is just that the simple act of being in love with you is enough for me. So you're off the hook.
Noah Calhoun: My dearest Allie,
I couldn't sleep last night because I know that it's over between us. I'm not bitter anymore, because I know that what we had was real. And if in some distant place in the future we see each other in our new lives, I'll smile at you with joy and remember how we spent a summer beneath the trees learning from each other and growing in love. The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds. And that's what you've given me. That's what I'd hoped to give to you forever. I love you.
I'll be seeing you, Noah.
Liz Parker: [Voiceover] Dear Max, What's so great about normal? Do you remember when you asked me that? Back then the answer was nothing, because of you Max, because of how much you love me. [we see Liz on a bus.] Now though, the answer is different. Normal is something I need, and that's why I have to leave. I have to figure out what my life means away from Roswell and away from you. [Max is reading this letter.] Don't hate me for doing this. I love you more than you could ever know. Liz.
Liz: So when you healed me you risked all of this getting out, didn't you?
Max: It was you.
Lucas: Peyton! It's you.
Lucas: When all my dreams come true, the one I want next to me. It's you. It's you Peyton.
(One Tree Hill)
Lorelai: I don’t have many people in my life who are in my life, permanently, forever. They will always be there for me, I will always be there for them. You know? There’s Rory, Sookie, this town, and you. Or at least, I think I’ve got-
Luke: You do.
Kate: How long, Sawyer? How long do you think we can play house?
Sawyer: Why don't we find out?
Liz: ...I would do anything... if it means being with you...
[Max smiles. After a moment, he turns back to take the lid off the cooker.]
Max: ...A trick I learned from Superman. Let's see if it really works.
[Liz half way smiles, and is watching him, curious. He picks a charcoal briquette out of the cooker and encloses it in his hand. With great effort he squeezes it, and bright white energy emanates from his fist. After a moment, he wipes the object in his hand on the bottom of his shirt.]
[Max slowly turns back to face Liz, then walks over to her. Holding her gaze, he gets down on one knee, and holds out the diamond he has just made.]
Liz: Oh my g...
Max: Liz... they're taking our home from us. ...They want to kill us... and... they might. ...But when I look in your eyes, I... I don't feel angry... or... deprived. ...I feel like the luckiest half-human on the planet. (Liz smiles.) You're pure... you're... you're true... and... you're real. And right now that seems like the only thing that's important. ...I want to be with you Liz... forever.
Liz: ...Forever may only be twelve days...
Max: --Then we'll take those twelve days... (He places the diamond in Liz's palm and closes her hand around it.) ...and we'll live twelve lifetimes.
[Finally, he makes his tender appeal.]
Max: ...Liz Parker... will you marry me?
[Holding his gaze, Liz slowly kneels down in front of Max and smiles.] Liz: ...Yes.
[Max smiles, and half laughs with joy and relief, then somberly pulls Liz towards him and gives her a brief, soft kiss. He pulls back for a moment.]
Max: ...After... graduation.
Liz: (smiles.) ...okay...
[They share a long, tender kiss.]
Mary: Can you manage without your stick?
Matthew: You are my stick.
Mary: We were a show that flopped.
Matthew: God, Mary. I’m so, so sorry. You know how sorry I am.
Mary: Don’t be. It wasn’t anyone’s fault. If it was, it was mine.
Matthew: You know cousin Violet came to me, told me to marry you.
Mary: When was this?
Matthew: A while ago. When we knew I would walk again.
Mary: Classic granny. What did you say?
Matthew: I couldn’t accept Lavinia’s sacrifice of her life. Her children, her future and then give her the brush off when I was well again, well, I couldn’t, could I?
Mary: Of course not.
Matthew: However much I might want to.
Mary: Absolutely not.
Arwen: Do you remember when we first met?
Aragorn: I thought I had strayed into a dream.
Arwen: Long years have passed....you did not wear the troubles you carry now...do you remember what I told you?
Aragorn: You said you'd bind yourself to me - forsaking the immortal life of your people.
Arwen: And to that I hold! I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the Ages of this world alone....I choose a mortal life. (and while saying this she gives him the Evenstar necklace)
Aragorn: You cannot give me this!
Arwen: It is mine to give to whom I will....like my heart. (and then they kiss)
(Lord of the Rings)
Harry looked around; there was Ginny running towards him; she had a hard, blazing look in her face as she threw her arms around him. And without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her. After several long moments – or it might have been half an hour – or possibly several sunlit days – they broke apart.
(Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince)
"I've seen ye so many times," he said, his voice whispering warm in my ear. "You’ve come to me so often. When I dreamed sometimes. When I lay in fever. When I was so afraid and so lonely I knew I must die. When I needed you, I would always see ye, smiling, with your hair curling up about your face. But ye never spoke. And ye never touched me."
“I can touch you now.” I reached up and drew my hand gently down his temple, his ear, the cheek and jaw that I could see. My hand went to the nape of his neck, under the clubbed bronze hair, and he raised his head at last, and cupped my face between his hands, love glowing strong in the dark blue eyes.
“Dinna be afraid,” he said softly. “There’s the two of us now.”
(Outlander series - Voyager)
Clare: I won't ever leave you, even though you're always leaving me.
Henry: But I never want to leave you.
(The Time Traveler's Wife)
Desmond: I love you, Penny. I've always loved you. I'm so sorry. I love you!
Penny: I love you too.
Desmond: I don't know where I am, but…
Penny: I'll find you, Des.
Desmond: I promise
Penny: - no matter what -
Desmond: I'll come back to you.
Penny : I won't give up.
Desmond, Penny: I promise. I love you.
Clare: "It's hard being left behind. I wait for Henry, not knowing where he is, wondering if he's okay.
It's hard to be the one who stays."
Henry: "I hate to be where she is not, when she is not.
And yet, I am always going, and she cannot follow."
(The Time Traveler's Wife)
Mary: Are you a creature of Duty?
Matthew: Not entirely.
Mary: When you laugh with me, or flirt with me is that a duty? Are you conforming to the fitness of things? Doing what’s expected?
Matthew: Don’t play with me… I don’t deserve it. Not from you.
Mary: You must be careful not to break Sybil’s heart. I think she has a crush on you.
Matthew: That’s something no one could accuse you of.
Mary: Oh, I don’t know…
Matthew: I assume you speak in a spirit of mockery.
Mary: You should have more faith.
Matthew: Shall I remind you of some of the choicest remarks you made about me when I arrived here. Because they live in my memory as fresh as the day they were spoken.
Mary: Oh, Matthew, what am I always telling you: You must pay no attention to the things I say…
Keenan : I can’t stop thinking about you.
Joan : I love conversations that start with the guy saying I can’t stop thinking about you. Mind you I’ve never actually been on the receiving end of any of those conversations…
Keenan : Just looking at you makes me happy.
Joan : I have–I have to sit down.
[almost knocks over the chair sitting down]
Keenan : When we’re together, whether or not I show it, I just can’t wait to hear the next words out of your mouth. But right now I need to ask you to do something for me.
Joan : Anything.
Keenan : Shut up.
(Playing by Heart)
Gretchen: Donnie Darko? What the hell kind of name is that? It's like some sort of superhero or something
Donnie: What makes you think I'm not?
Cameron: I found the ring in your sock. I didn't want you to propose out of some sort of knee-jerk reaction to what happened to Kutner.
Chase: Well, guess you don't have to worry about that anymore.
Cameron: I'm not, I...I don't care what happens. I just...want it to happen.
Chase: Are... are you proposing to me?
Cameron: I'm...proposing that...you propose to me.
Chase: After I broke up with you? After you ruined my planned proposal, you expect me to...
Cameron: I'm not expecting, I'm hoping.
[Chase gets down on his knee and takes her hand]
Matthew: Why? Don’t you want me?
Mary: Of course I want you... Very much.
Max: The other night, you know, when we went out...and the whole day before...ever since we kissed...I've been off balance. You made me forget that anything else existed, but that's not real.
Liz: It is the only real thing that I've ever felt.
Liz: Max...how is it possible that I could be...I could be the happiest that I've ever been in my entire life...you know, and now the saddest all at...all at one time?
Max: I think that's what being in love is.
Kate: [Pushing Sawyer in chest] When were you planning on telling me this?
Sawyer: [Whispering] Never.
Kate: Why not?! Why wouldn't you?!
Sawyer: Because I wanted you to believe we had a damn chance.
[Kate, crying, kisses Sawyer. They embrace.]
Sawyer: What was that for?
Kate: I don't know.
Mary: Would you have stayed? If I'd accepted you?
Matthew: Of course.
Mary: So I've ruined everything.
Matthew: You've shown me I've been living in a dream. And it's time to return to real life. Wish me luck with it, Mary. God knows I wish the best for you.
Lorelai: Hey, do you remember the first time we met?
Lorelai: I'm just trying to remember the first time we met. It must have been at Luke's, right?
Luke: It was at Luke's, it was at lunch, it was a very busy day, the place was packed, and this person
Lorelai: Ooh, is it me? Is it me?
Luke: This person comes tearing into the place in a caffeine frenzy.
Lorelai: Ooh, it's me.
Luke: I was with a customer. She interrupts me, wild-eyed, begging for coffee, so I tell her to wait her turn. Then she starts following me around, talking a mile a minute, saying God knows what. So finally I turn to her, and I tell her she's being annoying sit down, shut up, I'll get to her when I get to her.
Lorelai: Y'know, I bet she took that very well, 'cause she sounds just delightful.
Luke: She asked me what my birthday was. I wouldn't tell her. She wouldn't stop talking. I gave in. I told her my birthday. Then she opened up the newspaper to the horoscope page, wrote something down, tore it out, handed it to me.
Lorelai: God, seriously. You wrote the menu, didn't you?
Luke: So I'm looking at this piece of paper in my hand, and under "Scorpio," she had written, "You will meet an annoying woman today. Give her coffee and she'll go away." I gave her coffee.
Lorelai: (Smiles.) But she didn’t go away.
Luke: She told me to hold onto the horoscope put it in my wallet, and carry it around with me. (Pulls out a paper from his wallet) One day it will bring me good luck.
Lorelai: Well, man. I will say anything for a cup of coffee. (reads the paper) Um... I can't believe you kept this. You kept this in your wallet?
Luke: Eight years.
Lorelai: Eight years.
Luke: Lorelai, this thing we're doing here -me, you- I just want you to know I’m in, I’m all in.
Joey: Pacey… this is about how you carried my bag off the bus yesterday. This is about how when we go to the movies and you go and you buy popcorn, you always be sure you bring back a napkin so I don't wipe all the grease on my jeans. And this is about how just last week when we were at miniature golf you took all of the shots first so I would know the correct path.
[She unbuttons his shirt. He sucks his breath in lightly.]
Pacey: Well, that's just—
Joey: You taught me how to drive. And last year at prom, you knew that the bracelet I was wearing was my mom's. You kissed me first sweetheart.
[She pushes the shirt off of his shoulders.]
Joey: The second time you counted to 10 before doing it again, just in case I wanted to stop you.
[She kisses his hand.]
Joey: You bought me a wall.
Pacey: I didn't buy it so much as I—
Joey: We were alone on a boat for three months and you understood without a word why I wasn't ready.
[She takes off his undershirt.]
Joey: Do you have to ask me now why I am?
[He brushes her hair out of her eyes. They hold each others hands and caress.]
Joey: Pace, I'm going to count to ten… and then I'm going to start kissing you. If you don't want me to… you're just going
to have to stop me.
[They stare into each others eyes. She runs her hand up his arm and places it on his chest.]
Joey: Ten, my love.
Peyton: I was there Lucas. I was so proud of you but we hadn't talked in a long time and I saw you with Lindsay and I figured you guys were together which clearly you are. I like her. I do but do you remember when you first joined the Ravens and you took all my sketches to Thud without even asking and do you remember what you said that night when you first entered the gym?
Lucas: Your art matters. It's what got me here.
Peyton: Yeah, it's like you touched my soul and a few days ago I was ready to quit again but you saved me with the words you wrote about me in your novel. So if your struggling writing the next one you should know that your art matters Lucas. It's what got me here.
(One Tree Hill)
Mary: You mean you've forgiven me?
Matthew: No. I haven't forgiven you.
Mary: Well, then...
Matthew: I haven't forgiven you because I don’t believe you need my forgiveness. You’ve lived your life and I’ve lived mine. It’s time we live them together.
Mary: We've been on the edge of this so many times, Matthew. Please don't take me there again unless you're sure.
Matthew: I am sure. [...] And will you?
Mary: You must say it properly. I won’t answer unless you kneel down and everything.
Matthew: Lady Mary Crawley, will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?
“You are my courage, as I am your conscience,” he whispered. “You are my heart—and I your compassion. We are neither of us whole, alone. Do ye not know that, Sassenach?”“I do know that,” I said, and my voice shook. “That’s why I’m so afraid. I don’t want to be half a person again, I can’t bear it.”He thumbed a lock of hair off my wet cheek, and pulled me into his arms, so close that I could feel the rise and fall of his chest as he breathed. He was so solid, so alive, ruddy hair curling gold against bare skin. And yet I had held him so before—and lost him.His hand touched my cheek, warm despite the dampness of my skin.“But do ye not see how verra small a thing is the notion of death, between us two, Claire?” he whispered. My hands curled into fists against his chest. No, I didn’t think it a small thing at all.“All the time after ye left me, after Culloden—I was dead then, was I not?”“I thought you were. That’s why I—oh.” I took a deep, tremulous breath, and he nodded.“Two hundred years from now, I shall most certainly be dead, Sassenach,” he said. He smiled crookedly. “Be it Indians, wild beasts, a plague, the hangman’s rope, or only the blessing of auld age—I will be dead.”“Yes.”“And while ye were there—in your own time—I was dead, no?”I nodded, wordless. Even now, I could look back and see the abyss of despair into which that parting had dropped me, and from which I had climbed, one painful inch at a time. Now I stood with him again upon the summit of life, and could not contemplate descent. He reached down and plucked a stalk of grass, spreading the soft green beards between his fingers.“ ‘Man is like the grass of the field,’ ” he quoted softly, brushing the slender stem over my knuckles, where they rested against his chest. “ ‘Today it blooms; tomorrow it withers and is cast into the oven.’ ”He lifted the silky green tuft to his lips and kissed it, then touched it gently to my mouth.“I was dead, my Sassenach—and yet all that time, I loved you.”I closed my eyes, feeling the tickle of the grass on my lips, light as the touch of sun and air.“I loved you, too,” I whispered. “I always will.”The grass fell away. Eyes still closed, I felt him lean toward me, and his mouth on mine, warm as sun, light as air.“So long as my body lives, and yours—we are one flesh,” he whispered. His fingers touched me, hair and chin and neck and breast, and I breathed his breath and felt him solid under my hand. Then I lay with my head on his shoulder, the strength of him supporting me, the words deep and soft in his chest.“And when my body shall cease, my soul will still be yours. Claire—I swear by my hope of heaven, I will not be parted from you.”The wind stirred the leaves of the chestnut trees nearby, and the scents of late summer rose up rich around us; pine and grass and strawberries, sunwarmed stone and cool water, and the sharp, musky smell of his body next to mine.“Nothing is lost, Sassenach; only changed.”“That’s the first law of thermodynamics,” I said, wiping my nose.“No,” he said. “That’s faith.”
(Outlander series - Drums of Autumn)
Liz: Max, the day that you saved my life, your life just ended.
Max: No, that was the day my life began. Liz, when I was in that room, and they did what they did to me. You're what kept me alive. The thought of you. The way your eyes look into mine. Your smile. The touch of your skin. Your lips. Knowing you has made me human. Whether I die tomorrow or fifty years from now, my destiny is the same: it's you. I want to be with you, Liz. I love you.
Liz: I love you.
